Let’s Talk Shop Live: You’re Invited to Help Reimagine the Fab Lab

The 3DEXPERIENCE Lab is one of those rare places where anything feels possible. It’s where we’ve built Magic Wheelchair costumes, created prototypes, experimented with new fabrication methods, and shared ideas with makers from around the world.

The Lab is part of our Dassault Systèmes Boston campus, but it connects to a global network of over 1,000 maker spaces through the Fab Foundation, set up in collaboration with MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms. Dassault Systèmes supports it as part of a broader effort to make digital design and fabrication more accessible. Some people use it for learning, while others use it to develop products or try out new workflows. Whatever the reason, the goal is the same: figure things out by building.

Students, hobbyists, and entrepreneurs come through the space with varying skill levels, tool requirements, and project objectives. The Lab provides them with the resources and tools to design, prototype, simulate, and even have parts manufactured through connected services.

Each year, we consider ways to improve the Lab’s layout, identifying what works, what doesn’t, and what would help people get even more out of the space. This year, we’re not doing that alone. Through a series of live sessions on Discord*, “Let’s Talk Shop,” led by Chinloo and Sal Lama, we’re inviting our community of makers and designers to help us with every phase of improvements. From brainstorming what the Lab needs through build and installation, this is an opportunity to collaborate with others who share a passion for making the Lab as functional and user-friendly as possible.

Chinloo and Sal are mechanical engineers and longtime members of the SOLIDWORKS R&D team. They have both spent a lot of time in the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab collaborating on projects, prototyping, testing tools, and thinking through design problems with their hands. When they are not designing software, they use it to build all kinds of things – including Murphy beds, chicken coops, games, puzzles, and custom 3D prints- and share them all on their Our Next Make YouTube channel.

What We Did in the First “Let’s Talk Shop” Session

In April’s “Let’s Talk Shop” live Discord session, we gave a quick walkthrough of the Lab’s layout using a HomeByMe 3D model, then opened things up for discussion.

What should we work on first? Where are the bottlenecks? What kinds of tools and workflows do we need to support making?

The Lab’s mixed-use and adaptability to all kinds of projects are part of what makes it so special. This is why its layout and functionality need regular attention. Every change to the Lab must serve a wide mix of workflows.

The group provided great input, and the conversation eventually focused on workbench storage, how to make storage in a fab Lab modular, accessible, and not overly complicated. People shared workspace photos, tool lists, and ideas.

Chinloo sketched and used a digital whiteboard to log and keep track of suggestions.

Despite all the technology that brought us all together, it was just a group of people thinking through a real design problem together.

Join us Live on June 25 for the Next Session!

On June 25, we’ll take what we learned from that first discussion and begin developing design concepts for the storage system.

If you care about shop layout and tool access, or have ideas about making a shared space easier to use, this is a good place to speak up. No preparation is required; drop in and share what you know. Or listen and chime in when something feels relevant.

If you’re interested, we hope you’ll join in on the project and conversation.

Join Us Live on Discord on June 25!

The Stage “live stream” will start at 12 pm ET on June 6th.

Note:  A Discord login is required to view the event.

Join the Stage within the SOLIDWORKS server on Discord.
